Week 58 – Blood Transfusion?

As you may have read from the Team Brouwer Facebook post earlier this week, Brouwer’s platelets were too low to start cycle 6.  As is an expected side affect of his chemo, Brouwer’s bone marrow has been slower and slower to recover with each passing cycle.  As a result, when Brouwer’s platelets rebound to 100,000 (which may still take a couple of weeks), we will be able to begin the 6th cycle.

However, Brouwer’s blood results from this past Wednesday were noteably different than all previous draws in that his hemoglobin was also abnormally low.  Dr. Lulla noted that Brouwer was borderline in need of a blood transfusion and so gave us the option to transfuse this past Wednesday.  We declined.  Brouwer was fine the rest of the day Wednesday but vomited yesterday at BDI (therapy) and again today.  As a result, we will be headed to Lurie’s tomorrow morning to get another blood test and quite possibly Brouwer’s first blood transfusion.

Intellectually we recognize that this is “no big deal.”  We read the Facebook posts of other parents with kids with brain tumors and are daily reminded of how incredibly blessed we are.  But still, when it’s your baby, any step in an unwanted direction causes heartache.

Please pray with us.  Not just that Brouwer’s lethargy would lift and that a blood transfusion would not be necessary tomorrow but pray for the day when kids don’t have brain tumors and parents don’t have to negotiate these daily fears.
